The latest epidemic to hit america is obesity and the situation has become worse than ever. Can anyone say how American Obesity is now an epidemic? Is it inevitable that American parents and children remain just the right weight? If you speak with an American, you will see how concerned they are about the calorie intake. They almost always check the nutritional description on any cereal or box of food to double check the quantity they should consume. This is something you will see no Japanese or Indian do. So why is American obesity still up there at a sky high range threatening national health?
Some people who form a part of American obesity circle claim that they did not become fat or overweight on their own accord. They say that they do not enjoy being the clothes size which reads triple X plus but, they also claim that the fault is solely not on their part. But the economists see a different point of view which shocks the public which states that America being obese is healthy on the economy. Experts also claim that changed lifestyle patterns too are responsible for this American obesity disaster. Decades ago, people got paid in the workplace for the physical effort they contributed at work but nowadays, people pay gymnasiums in order to shed a few tears and burn calories after work.
Another group of people put the blame on women becoming independant from which the whole family routine has changed where fast food routines are concerned. According to this theory if women remained in the kitchens preparing their own meals and looking after the family’s nutritional requirements, industry giants in the food industry would have not been able to rise up in the sky and destroy a healthy nation.
American obesity is surely hitting the headlines around the world and is worrying many health practitioners. After a few decades of living on fast food, what can experts do to control American obesity? What do policy makers say about American obesity and how can they bring about a change in society? All this is a humongous challenge to Americans today!

Losing weight painlessly and easily is something every over weight person dreams of. People are on the look out for any natural products that can suppress appetite or simply burn away excess fat. Hoodia gordonii has become popular worldwide as a weight lose herb. It is considered as an appetite suppressant dietary supplement.
The cultural and religious life of the African people abounds in traditional remedies. For instance, over 156 medicinal plant species are reported to be used in gynecological complaints. When corporations or other commercial initiatives takes freely the traditional knowledge without the consent of the owners of the knowledge and commercializes them into a product, it is called ‘biopiracy’. The South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) developed and subsequently patented Hoodia. CSIR sold the exclusive right to a British Company. After the issue of biopiracy was raised, a small percentage of the royalties was transferred to the trust on behalf of the San people. There is a proliferation of Hoodia products in the market such as Hoodia Pure, Dex L10 Hoodia , HoodiThin Liquid and many more.
The indigenous peoples inhabit a habitat for generations and centuries interacting intensely with nature. They depend on nature for their livelihood as well for survival that they revere nature as the provider of life. From these interactions and observations, they learn about the characteristics of various species and possible uses. These are then verified through repeated experimentation or from repeated similar experiences. This knowledge is then transmitted onward to the next generation. The knowledge covers all aspects of life and living including crops, food, human and animal health and even beauty care.

Hoodia Gordonii, one of the hoodia species, has been reported to be traditionally used by the San Bushmen. They use the plant, amongst other things, to suppress hunger. The San Bushmen consume Hoodia when they are on long hunting trips that takes them into the Kalahari desert where food is sparse. The South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) isolated the active ingredient and gave it a name, P57. CSIR patented P57 in 1996. With CSIR officially recognizing the San people as the source of this knowledge in 2002, the San Bushmen have become eligible to get a share in the profit from the marketing of Hoodia.
Obesity is a modern day problem. It was almost unknown in ancient times. It is estimated by World Health Organization (WHO) that there are some 400 million adults who are afflicted with obesity. Obesity has become a major public health issue that WHO declared it to be a global epidemic. A sedentary life and bad food habits mostly cause obesity though it is simply preventable in most cases. However, mental illness and often genetic cause too can lead to obesity. Obesity can be checked in many ways. There is the weight loss program that one takes up to lose excess weight. Diet supplement and medication too are available in the market. There is also a surgical procedure for obesity.
Hoodia Gordonii grows 1 meter high. It is a flowering plant. Khoba, Xhooba and Ghaap are the local names given to it. Hoodia is found to grow naturally in Angola, Namibia, South Africa and Botswana. Hoodia is available in the form of capsules, tablets, syrup and drinks. There are a number of hoodia drinks such as the Hoodia Gordonii Shake Mix which contains 16 vitamins and minerals besides protein and fat. This is to be taken with milk or water.
The increasing market for Hoodia Gordonii led to its being indiscriminately collected and traded. This led to a situation where the plant might have to be listed as an endangered species if its collection and trade are not strictly regulated and controlled. As required under such a situation, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) listed the plant in its list. All export of Hoodia Gordonii from Africa requires CITES certification. It also means that all certified exports are genuine Hoodia Gordonii.

BBC reported on Hoodia Gordonii plant in 2003. Later 60 Minutes too reporting on this plant in 2004. The plant provoked instant excitement across the world. Until then Hoodia Gordonii was an unknown entity. The exciting news was that consumption of Hoodia could suppress or reduce appetite. This was good news for the obese and those who are desperate to loss weight. Hoodia Gordonii is one amongst the 13 species of Hoodia. It is found in Africa. Hoodia Gordonii is found to be naturally occurring in the Sub-Saharan countries of Namibia and South Africa.
Obesity is a condition where excess body fat accumulates in the body. It affects the health of the person. Whether a person is obese or not is determined by body mass index (BMI). It compares weight with height. When a person has a BMI between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2 then the person is considered to be over-weight. If the BMI is over 30 kg/m2 then the person is said to be obese. Diseases such as heart disease, breathing difficulties, osteoarthritis and certain types of cancer are associated with obesity. Obesity is normally caused due to excessive calorie intake or overeating, and lack of physical activity. However, sometimes genetic causes or psychiatric illness can also be the cause of obesity.
Many food supplements with Hoodia Gorodonii as one of its ingredients are marketed. They are in many forms such as syrups, protein shakes, capsules, infusions, tea, liquid tinctures, coffee, and tablets. With the rise of popularity of Hoodia, a number of products are in the market with Hoodia Gordonii as one of its constituent. So far there are no side effects reported yet with its use. Hoodia is still sourced from Sub-Saharan African countries. Many of the products used liquid hoodia as its ingredient as the Hoodia Shake by Desert Burn Industries.
Physical exercise and dieting can make a dent to overweight. Appetite reducing anti-obesity drugs are available in the market. A number of weight loss programs are also available to choose from. However, a good result can be achieved only when one makes the necessary changes in life style and strictly follow the practices that were decided upon. A major public health problem is obesity though preventable. This is now official. The sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy food habits and lack of physical activities are issues that are required to be addressed.

I use to belong to a category of people who suffer from sleeping disorders. After several close calls of falling asleep behind the wheel I stopped taking sleeping pills and decided to do something about my problem… I decided to use rocking motion. Rocking motion is a natural way to help a person to fall asleep. For thousands of years mothers were rocking their babies in their arms in order to help babies fall asleep. Later someone built the first cradle… We also know, that the rocking motion of hammocks and rocking chairs affects the adults the same way that the rocking motion of the cradle affects infants. Adults become relaxed and often fall asleep. This happens despite the fact that hammocks and rockers are not intended and are inconvenient for the deep, long sleeping. I decided to combine a bed, which is a device intended for sleeping, and the relaxing rocking motion. I took a regular twin-size bed and built a rocking platform for it. I am very pleased with the results. I sleep much-much better now… The first gear motor I installed was faster, and while it did not help me a lot with my sleeping problem, I noticed that I started loosing weight. I kind of expected that because I knew rocking motion suppresses appetite. (Do you remember being on a boat and how the wave action strongly affected you in the form of motion sickness? You were not hungry, were you?) We all spend hours a day watching TV. You watch TV while sitting on the couch; I was watching TV while being on my bed. Believe it or not, I lost some significant weight simply because I did not want to make late night trips to my fridge. Losing weight was not my goal and thus I switched to the slower gear motor.
Further modifications.
In my bed I am now using a slower and a much quieter gear motor than what is shown in the video. I am currently working on installing a stepper motor to work with the bed. With the stepper motor, the rocking system would offer dozens of distinctive rocking motions defined by adjustable amplitudes and adjustable speeds. The stepper motor would also be significantly quieter than the current setup. Among the dozens of rocking motions the user will always be able to pin point the motions that do not cause motion sickness and, at the same time, help the user to sleep well and/or loose weight. Also, the bed I am currently using provides side-to-side motion only. However the suspension of the bed allows me to easily enhance the bed performance. An additional stepper motor drive can be installed on the bed in order to provide head to toe motion, allowing for dozens of motion trajectories between the two synchronized motors. All this will give us literally thousands of combinations of trajectories, speeds, amplitudes, and timing. Medical studies will have to be conducted to help the user to choose the appropriate type of the motion or switch to a different motion, if necessary.
Vestibular apparatus.
The vestibular apparatus is the part of our inner ear that gets affected by the rocking motion. Rocking action on the apparatus causes our reactions such as relaxation or motion sickness. There is no need to rock the whole human body in order to get the reactions. While considering the design of my system, I decided to make a less expensive bed that swings about a point at the footboard area. The headboard area however still swings at full amplitude (10 inch stroke).
Safety.
To eliminate excessive forces, I used as weak of a drive as possible. I have chosen to suspend the bed on chains as they can hold 2,000 lb. The headboard end of the bed is suspended on longer chains. Longer chains give the ability to move the bed from side to side and do very little work against gravity. Such a design allows rocking of 500 pounds while using a relatively weak drive. Safety guards will eliminate pinch point hazards. As a precaution the bed should not be installed close to the walls or heavy objects.
Noise.
Another advantage of stepper motors is that they do not have gears and they do not make noise. The suspension of the bed makes no noise at all. The gear motor I am using now makes barely detectable, low frequency monotonic noise. Such a sound can be easily covered with low, relaxing music, sounds of ocean tide, rain, etc.
